Shuklaphanta protects a great sweep of open Terai grassland in Nepal's far-western corner, where the country's largest herd of swamp deer gathers on the phantas. Far off the tourist trail, it also shelters tigers, wild elephants and rich birdlife along the Mahakali floodplain. It is the wild, low-altitude counterpart to the better-known Chitwan and Bardia.
