Visa & Permits

For all travelers and trekkers

Nepal permit guide — visa, TIMS, ACAP, restricted areas

Every Nepal tourist permit in one reference — fees, offices, what to bring, whether an agency is required, and the language you'll need at the counter. Updated for the 2026 fee schedule and the post-2023 TIMS rules.

Permits reference table

Restricted-area permits require a TAAN-registered trekking agency — solo trekking is technically illegal on those routes. Everything else can be done individually.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a Nepal visa on arrival, or do I need to apply in advance?

Visa on arrival is available at Tribhuvan International Airport for nearly all nationalities. USD 30 (15 days), USD 50 (30 days), USD 125 (90 days), cash only — USD/EUR/GBP/AUD/JPY accepted. Bring one passport photo. No advance application required for most travelers. Citizens of a few specific countries (China, Pakistan, Nigeria, plus a handful) must apply via embassy in advance.

Why do I need a trekking agency for TIMS now?

Since 2023, TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) cards are only issued through TAAN-registered agencies. Independent walk-in trekkers cannot get one. The policy change came after a series of solo-trekker disappearances; the regulation now requires agency-mediated trip registration for traceability.

Which permits can I get individually without an agency?

ACAP, Sagarmatha National Park entry, Chitwan, Langtang, Bardia — all individual. The restricted-area permits (Upper Mustang, Manaslu, Tsum Valley, Dolpo, Kanchenjunga) require a TAAN-registered agency. TIMS is also agency-only now.

Where is the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu?

Maitighar, Kathmandu — about 1 km southeast of Singha Durbar. Open Sunday–Thursday 10:00–15:00, Friday 10:00–13:00. Closed Saturday and government holidays. Long queue Sunday and Monday mornings; midweek midday is fastest.

Can I pay permit fees with a credit card?

Mostly no. Visa-on-arrival is cash only (USD/EUR/GBP/AUD/JPY). NTB permit counter takes NPR cash. Some larger agencies accept credit card for the bundled permit cost. Always carry cash for permits — ATMs at airport are unreliable for the larger amounts.

What if my visa expires while I'm trekking?

Overstay is USD 3/day plus a USD 5 admin fee, paid on departure at the airport visa counter. It's not catastrophic but it's expensive and can delay your flight. Plan extensions in Kathmandu or Pokhara before the trek — both offices issue same-day.
