Dang दाङ
Deukhuri Valley, Tharu culture
Dang is built around two broad inner-Terai valleys, Deukhuri and Dang, with its headquarters at Ghorahi. It is a heartland of Tharu culture and a road junction between the hills and the western plains, on the way to Bardia and the far west. The Swargadwari ashram lies just over its hill rim.
About Dang
Dang is built around two broad, sal-forested inner-Terai valleys — the larger Dang valley to the east and the Deukhuri valley to the west — together one of the widest inland valley systems in Nepal. Deukhuri hosts the permanent capital of Lumbini Province, while Ghorahi, the district headquarters, is one of Nepal's fastest-growing cities; the Rapti River winds through the lowland floor between hills thick with deer, leopard and occasional elephant that cross from Bardia to the west. The Tharu Cultural Museum in Ghorahi is the best single introduction to the district's indigenous heritage.
The Tharu people of Dang sustain a distinct culture of longhouse villages, weaving traditions and the Maghi new-year festival that marks the Tharu calendar in January. Swargadwari ashram, one of western Nepal's most important Hindu pilgrimage sites, lies just over the northern hill rim and is easily reached from Ghorahi. The Mahendra Highway crosses the district, making Dang a natural overnight stop on any journey between Butwal and Nepalgunj.

Getting there
Ghorahi is about 410 km from Kathmandu via the Prithvi–Mahendra highway, roughly 10–11 hours by bus. Buses leave from Kathmandu's Gongabu bus park, mostly overnight. The Mahendra Highway runs through the district, so Dang is well connected to both Butwal to the east and Nepalgunj to the west; shared jeeps fill onward gaps toward Pyuthan and the hills.
