Negation patterns — not, no, never, nobody, nowhere

Nepali negation isn’t one form — it’s a family of suffixes and standalone words that vary by tense, mood, and what kind of meaning you’re negating. Existence (छैन) and identity (होइन) are different. Past (गरेन) and habitual (गर्दैन) are different. Twelve patterns cover almost everything you’ll say.

Common questions

Can I just use छैन for everything?
No. छैन negates हुनु (existence/state). For action verbs, you need the right verb-form negative — -दिनँ for 1sg habitual, -दैन for 3rd habitual, -एन for simple past, -एको छैन for perfect. Using छैन alone with an action verb sounds wrong.
What's the difference between छैन and होइन?
छैन negates existence/state: "पानी छैन" = "there is no water." होइन negates identity: "यो पानी होइन" = "this is not water (it's something else)." The contrast lines up with the छ-vs-हो distinction.
Does Nepali allow double negatives?
Not in the standard "two negative particles" sense. But "कहिल्यै ___ छैन" (never + negative verb) is grammatical and required — कहिल्यै by itself isn't enough. Treat the negative-concord pattern like English "never don't" being wrong, but "never not at all" being expected.
