Siraha सिराहा

Siraha lies in the eastern Madhesh plains, with the busy highway town of Lahan — roughly 350 km east of Kathmandu — as its commercial engine. It is firmly Maithili country: Mithila painting traditions, the Sama Chakeva bird-figurine festival that marks the onset of winter migration, and the seasonal cultural cycle of the Terai define everyday life. The district headquarters of Siraha town itself is a smaller, quieter centre south-east of Janakpur. Border bazaars at Thadi–Laukaha and other crossings link the district to Bihar's Madhubani region — the Indian heartland of the same culture.

Lahan has grown into a regional medical and commercial hub for the eastern Terai, with hospitals serving the surrounding plains. Siraha is honest agricultural plains — jute, paddy, mustard — with no large national parks or mountain views. Its draw is the immersive, living Maithili culture shared across the Nepal-Bihar border, best experienced during Sama Chakeva (October–November) or the Chhath festival on the district's many ponds.
