Ramechhap, a Bagmati hill district centred on the Tamakoshi River valley, became a fixture on most trekkers' itineraries in 2022 when the majority of Lukla flights were rerouted through Manthali Airport to ease congestion at Kathmandu. The short flight from Manthali cuts the road approach to the Everest region by the better part of two days. The district's own Numbur Cheese Circuit, passing the old cheese factory at Thodung, is a worthwhile trek in its own right.

About Ramechhap

Ramechhap is a Bagmati hill district on the Tamakoshi River that became widely known to trekkers from 2022 onwards, when Lukla-bound flights were substantially rerouted through Manthali Airport to relieve congestion at Kathmandu. Manthali sits at 474 metres, roughly four hours from Kathmandu by road, and the 20-to-25-minute hop to Lukla is one of the shortest mountain flights in Nepal. The district has its own trekking offering in the Numbur Cheese Circuit — a roughly 100 km loop around Numbur Himal through Sherpa villages, yak pastures and the old Thodung cheese factory, beginning at Shivalaya on the classic Jiri–Everest trail.

The Tamakoshi valley supports a network of hydropower projects, of which the Upper Tamakoshi scheme is one of Nepal's largest. The district's communities are a mix of Tamang, Sherpa and hill Brahmin and Chhetri households. The Sailung hilltop at around 3,100 metres, with its temples and 360-degree views of the eastern Himalaya, is a short detour above the highway. Manthali's role as an aviation gateway means that Ramechhap now features on almost every Everest-region trekker's itinerary even if they spend no extra time in the district itself.

Getting there

Manthali, the district headquarters and airport, is about 132 km from Kathmandu — roughly four to four and a half hours by private vehicle via the Sindhuli or Tamakoshi corridor. Public buses depart Kathmandu's New Bus Park early in the morning to connect with the first Lukla flights. Trekkers for the Numbur Cheese Circuit begin from Shivalaya, a further hour's drive east.
