Doti डोटी
Seti River, Shaileshwari temple
Doti is a far-western hill district on the Seti River, centred on the twin towns of Dipayal and Silgadhi. Its landmark is the Shaileshwari Temple above Silgadhi, a major Sudurpaschim pilgrimage drawing crowds at Navaratri. The surrounding hills preserve the Doteli dialect and a traditional far-western way of life.
About Doti
Doti is the historic core of what was once the Doti Kingdom, a hill principality that held sway over much of the far-western region for centuries and gave the Doteli language its name. Its twin headquarters towns of Dipayal and Silgadhi sit on the Seti River, and above Silgadhi the Shaileshwari Temple — one of the great Shakti shrines of the far west — draws the largest Navaratri pilgrimage in the province, with a motorable road now reaching the temple compound. A 90-minute drive from Silgadhi reaches Jhigrana village, the last road point before the entry checkpoint for Khaptad National Park, whose plateau and sacred ponds lie a further two-day trek beyond.
Doti people are proud keepers of the Doteli dialect — the prestige form of the far-western vernacular — and of the Deuda circle dance that is inseparable from festivals and weddings across the whole province. The district has a distinct identity rooted in its royal past: temple architecture, court chronicles and the memory of the Doti kings feature in local schooling and ceremony. Dipayal has a small domestic airstrip with occasional connections; by road it is around five hours from Dhangadhi, making it one of the more reachable of the inner Sudurpaschim hill districts.
